VDSL/FTTC Very High Speed Digital Subsciber Lines and Fibre to the Cabinet

  • High speed internet service designed for residential users
  • Often only available in residential areas but sometimes can be installed in businesses
  • High upload and download speed - suitable for off-site backup and all cloud based services such as email hosting and SharePoint services
  • Not much more expensive than standatd ADSL business broadband - an sensible upgrade if it is available
  • This is a contended (shared with other local users) service. If the local area demands a lot of internet traffic then this connection will suffer

BT Infinity, Sky Fibre,  VDSL or FTTC are all services similar to Residential Fibre services such as Virgin Fibre Broadband in that they are designed for residential users but have been adopted by some companies for small business. Virgin's service is slightly different in that they bring fibre connectivity to your door rather than connecting you through traditional copper cabling to a fibre cabinet such as BT or Sky. This makes very little difference to the service as all of these services are contended (shared by the locality) and none have a service level agreement with the customer for the connectivity or speed of the connection.
